Slalom Water Ski for Deep Cuts Around the Buoy

A slalom water ski is a single ski that you carve around the buoys in sharp cuts, instead of gliding straight ahead on two skis. Exactly this edge-to-edge carving is the appeal that a combo set cannot match. For it you find a curated selection of water skis from Radar with us.

Switching to one ski changes everything. You build edge grip and speed, lean against the pull and shoot through the turn. Whether you are riding your first clean pass or shortening the line, the right ski carries you further.

Our models run from a forgiving beginner shape to a pure tournament build. Every slalom water ski in the shop comes from riders who carve behind the boat themselves, not from an anonymous catalogue. Current models are available right away, from the wider all-terrain ski to the narrow race build.

Build Angle and Speed on Your Slalom Water Ski

On a slalom water ski, speed does not come from the boat alone but from your cut. The earlier and cleaner you set the edge, the more angle and speed you carry into the buoy. The boat pulls at a constant rate, you turn that pull into acceleration.

A narrow shape and sharp edges grip instantly and let you ride tighter and more aggressively. The ski accelerates out of the turn and gives you the reserve you need at the next ball. That is how a solid pass becomes a fast one.

What matters is the balance of grip and stability. Too much edge costs control, too little costs angle. A good waterski slalom setup is tuned so it delivers both and keeps you safe even at high speed. With the right rope and boat speed you get even more out of every cut.

Wide Crossover or a Pure Slalom Water Ski for You

Before you buy, the basic question is whether a wide crossover or a pure slalom water ski suits you better. A crossover like the Radar Union is wider, more forgiving and easier to get up on, ideal for the start and relaxed laps. The larger surface makes the deep water start much easier, especially the first time you stand on one ski.

A dedicated slalom waterski is narrower, faster and built for maximum edge grip. It rewards clean technique and is the right call once you run the course seriously. For your first seasons a wide slalom water ski usually works better, because it forgives mistakes.

If you still switch between disciplines, take a look at the combo skis too. As soon as you carve regularly and start the course, the step up to a real slalom ski pays off. A beginner slalom water ski gets you on the water, a performance ski takes you deeper into the buoys.

Ski Length by Weight and Boat Speed

The right length decides how your slalom water ski runs. As a rule of thumb, the heavier you are and the slower the boat, the longer the ski. A longer ski carries more and runs calmer, a shorter one turns faster and reacts more directly.

The overview below gives you a first reference point by body weight and boat speed.

Body weight Boat speed Recommended length
up to 60 kg 46 to 52 km/h approx. 163 to 165 cm
60 to 80 kg 49 to 55 km/h approx. 165 to 168 cm
80 to 95 kg 52 to 57 km/h approx. 168 to 171 cm
over 95 kg 55 to 58 km/h approx. 171 cm and up

These values are guidelines, not a fixed rule, and lighter riders often size down to a women's slalom water ski length. On top comes the setup of binding and fin. A fixed front boot, a rear boot or an RTP plate at the back, plus matching waterski bindings. Get the combination right and you sit secure and transfer every move straight to the ski. The best slalom water ski is the one matched to your weight, speed and level.
